F1 Embedded Application Software Engineer (Geneva - Switzerland)

Join the FIA and play a key role in the development and monitoring of the advanced technologies that power Formula 1.

As an application software engineer within the FIA Technical Department, you will strengthen our internal embedded software capabilities to implement, monitor, and enforce Formula 1 technical and sporting regulations. You will work on complex multi-system electronic projects requiring seamless integration between control units, sensors, communication networks, and data systems.

Based in Geneva, this new position requires working within a dynamic multidisciplinary team and includes travel to circuits during Formula 1 events (approximately 12 events per year).

MISSIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Embedded application software development

• Design, implement, validate, and maintain robust embedded software developed in-house for key FIA Formula 1 platforms, including the FIA Standard ECU and the Accident Data Recorder, to monitor and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Lead end-to-end multi-system integration between control units, sensors, vehicle communication buses, telemetry networks, and FIA data analysis suites.
• Translate complex sporting, technical, and operational requirements into high-integrity software architectures, detailed specifications, and rigorous verification plans.
• Develop specialized simulation, testing, and data analysis tools to accelerate software validation, support regulatory evolution, and ensure operational availability.
• Perform functional and integration testing on test benches and in vehicle environments in close collaboration with F1 teams, engine manufacturers, and electronic suppliers.
• Troubleshoot, optimize, and maintain application software repositories, applying rigorous code reviews, version control, and clear technical documentation to ensure long-term reliability and maintainability.
• Build and develop internal engineering capabilities, strengthening the FIA's operational independence and its responsiveness to emerging technical requirements.

Electronic systems auditing

• Inspect competitors' embedded software, system behavior, and telemetry data to verify compliance with chassis and powertrain regulations.
• Develop automated auditing tools and collaborate with suppliers to optimize electronic inspection and homologation processes.

Development strategy and regulatory support

• Support future regulatory updates through proactive simulation, system modeling, and technical validation.
• Define specifications for future FIA electronic architectures, protect FIA intellectual property, and provide technical contributions to F1 working groups.

Race and testing support

• Provide trackside support during F1 races and tests (~12 events/year) to configure, operate, and monitor FIA electronic and data recording systems.
• Analyze vehicle telemetry in real-time to verify regulatory compliance and resolve inter-system software anomalies in collaboration with teams and manufacturers.

PROFILE:

• Master's in electronics, control engineering, software engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 3 to 5 years of professional experience in embedded control systems or real-time application software development in a competitive motorsport environment (Formula 1, Formula E, WEC).
• Knowledge of the FIA Formula 1 Standard ECU and its software tool suite would be a significant asset.
• Proven experience in development, testing, and lifecycle management of real-time embedded software; proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape.
• Good understanding of chassis and powertrain operation in Formula 1, Formula E, or WEC, including associated electronic, electrical, communication, control, and data systems.
• Demonstrated experience in carrying out complex multi-system electronic projects involving the integration and validation of interconnected embedded systems.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, autonomy under pressure, and adaptability to a fast-paced track environment.
• Absolute discretion regarding confidential data; written and oral mastery of English.
