Do you want to dive into the growing drone industry and acquire enriching experience in a dynamic scale-up environment?

At Flyability, we believe that robots should be sent into dangerous places and risky environments instead of humans. To support this conviction, we created Elios, the world's first collision-tolerant flying robot, capable of safely entering, examining, and inspecting confined spaces so that people do not have to. With more than 150 employees and 1,500 customers, Flyability is the market leader in the UAS indoor inspection industry. Joining Flyability does not just mean taking a new job; it is seizing the opportunity to improve the lives of millions of people and contribute to the future of robotics. To complete our creative and dynamic team in Lausanne, we are looking for a:

Firmware Engineer Intern (100%)

Start date: january 2027

Your role:

As a Firmware Engineer Intern, you will join our team to develop and test embedded software in Rust. Depending on project needs and your interests, you will work on bare-metal firmware running on microcontrollers, on embedded Linux systems, or both. This is a hands-on role at the intersection of hardware and software: you will write code that runs on real devices, deploy it on the target hardware, and debug it with the associated tools.

What you will take on:

Your responsibilities will cover one or more of the following areas, depending on project needs:

  • Writing, debugging, and profiling embedded Rust firmware for microcontrollers (no_std, embedded-hal, and an asynchronous or RTOS-type framework such as Embassy or RTIC).
  • Implementation and integration of peripheral drivers and communication layers via SPI, I²C, UART, USB, CAN, or Ethernet.
  • Contribution to bootloader and firmware update strategies, including memory layout, image validation, and secure rollback.
  • Building logging paths and data transport from device to host, from embedded storage to streaming interfaces.
  • Developing Rust software for embedded Linux targets: user-space services, kernel interfaces (sysfs, GPIO, IIO, V4L2), and cross-compilation for a custom Linux distribution.

Your profile:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Embedded Systems, or a related field - in progress or recently obtained.
  • You have written Rust outside of a graded assignment - a personal project, a contribution, anything you built out of desire. You do not need to be an expert; the specific embedded parts will be learned here.
  • A sincere interest in low-level software, and the willingness to open a datasheet to find the answer yourself.
  • Enough knowledge in C or C++ to read a vendor SDK.
  • Good level of English. French or any other additional language is an asset.
